The European Judo Championships Cadets 2026 begin in Gran Canaria, bringing together Europe’s next wave of talent. In cadet judo, this opening day is about more than first contests—it is the start of a new chapter for hundreds of young athletes.
A total of 438 judoka from 43 nations have arrived for this year’s championship. That makes the 2026 edition one of the biggest in the event’s recent history and underlines just how strong the level of cadet judo remains across Europe.
The numbers tell a clear story. Participation in the Cadet European Championships has stayed consistently high over the past five years, showing both stability and growth in the competition. Only one edition stands above the rest: Sofia 2024, which set the event record with 511 athletes from 44 nations.
Gran Canaria now takes its place just behind that landmark year. With 438 competitors, the 2026 championships are the second-largest Cadet European Championships on record according to the figures provided ahead of the opening day.
That scale matters. A field this deep means more difficult draws, more variety in styles and a bigger spotlight on the athletes who can handle the pressure from the very first hajime. At cadet level, these events often offer an early glimpse of the judoka who may later shape the senior scene.
Recent editions show how solid the event has become year after year. Riga 2021 welcomed 391 athletes from 37 nations, followed by Poreč 2022 with 420 from 40 nations. Odivelas 2023 hosted 404 athletes representing 40 nations, before the record-breaking turnout in Sofia. Skopje 2025 then brought together 421 athletes from 41 nations, and now Gran Canaria has pushed the total back up again.
Gran Canaria is hosting the second-biggest cadet Europeans on record.
For the athletes stepping onto the tatami, those figures are more than statistics. They reflect the size of the challenge and the opportunity waiting in front of them. Every opening-round contest carries weight in a championship where the field is packed with ambitious young competitors from across the continent.
The first day begins with excitement, pressure and the sense that something important is about to unfold. Europe’s brightest cadet talents are here, and Gran Canaria is ready to see who makes the first move.
