Dushanbe brings out Tavano’s best again as Italy’s heavyweight takes gold

Asya Tavano delivered another big statement in Dushanbe, adding fresh shine to the women’s +78kg final. Against China’s Jinesinuer Ayiman, the Italian struck early, picking up a yuko that immediately put her in the driver’s seat.

Chasing the score, Ayiman had no choice but to press forward and raise the pace. Tavano, though, stayed composed and hard to break down, absorbing the pressure and keeping her opponent from finding clean openings. The longer it went on, the more it felt like Tavano had the contest under control, protecting her advantage all the way to the finish.

A single early yuko was enough to set the whole final’s tone.

This gold makes it two titles for Tavano in Dushanbe, following her victory in 2024 and now again in 2026. After the final she highlighted how special the city is for her, pointing to the energy from the crowd and the confidence she’s built through strong training blocks—work she feels is paying off across events.

China still left the final day with plenty to celebrate too, having already taken gold at -100 kg and pushing for more podium moments in the heavyweight category. In the first bronze medal contest, Poland’s Kinga Wolszczak faced Xinran Niu. Niu scored a yuko and later produced a counter for ippon, stepping off the mat visibly delighted as spectators celebrated with her.

The second bronze fight saw Mariia Ivanova (RUS) meet Mokhlaroyim Tukhtamisheva (UZB). Ivanova wrapped it up with osaekomi in under a minute and a half.

For Europe, Tavano’s repeat success was the headline moment.
