Fabio Basile’s biggest win now has a name: Aiden Mike

Fabio Basile has lived the kind of peak most judoka chase forever: becoming an Olympic champion. But in a new interview, the Italian says something unexpected—nothing matched the day he became a father. On 1 November 2025, Basile and his partner Nica welcomed their son, Aiden Mike, and Basile describes it as a life-defining moment that reshaped everything.

Even Olympic memories can be topped when real life hits.

Aiden Mike’s name carries a personal weight. Basile explains it honours his late brother, a promise he made to Nica immediately after the loss. It’s a detail that adds quiet depth to an athlete often known for big energy on the tatami.

He also opens up about how brutal elite routines can be away from the spotlight. Basile says they had hoped to start a family for more than a year, but the extreme strain of making -66 kg made it difficult. After leaving that weight category and returning to normal eating, he felt his body recover.

At home, Basile credits Nica as the steady engine of their new life. As a former high-level judoka, she understands the demands of the IJF World Judo Tour and the discipline required to stay sharp. Basile says she does most of the work, while he’s simply happy to wake up, be present, and enjoy the small moments.

That doesn’t mean the fighter in him has faded. Basile recalls waking up from major cervical spine surgery—an operation serious enough that doctors warned his career could be finished—and immediately talking about returning and Los Angeles. He stops short of promising an Olympic push for LA28, but makes it clear the ambition is still there: rebuild, stay humble, and chase his best level again.

Basile returned to competition at the Tokyo Grand Slam last December. He recently placed fifth at the 2026 Upper Austria Grand Prix, losing the bronze-medal contest to Team USA’s Jack Yonezuka. Next on his schedule is the Grand Slam in Kazakhstan (8–10 May), and he also plans to support fellow Italians Giovanni Esposito and Manuel Lombardo in the -73 kg category at the European Championships in Tbilisi (16–19 April).
