Tara Babulfath Brings Olympic-Level Momentum Back to Berlin

Tara Babulfath will be one of the standout names at the Berlin Junior European Cup on 20–21 June. While the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar has already opened the race for Los Angeles 2028 qualification points, the Swedish judoka is taking a different path this weekend and returning to junior competition in Berlin.

That contrast says a lot about where Babulfath stands right now. She is still young enough to compete on the junior circuit, but her results already place her firmly among the top names in world judo. At Paris 2024, she won Olympic bronze, making history for Swedish judo and showing that her rise is not a distant promise but a present reality.

Even so, Berlin is not a step backward. It is another chance to compete, sharpen form, and add to a growing list of strong performances. Earlier this season, Babulfath took silver at the Tbilisi Grand Slam, confirming that she can deliver on the senior stage against elite opposition.

Berlin gets an Olympic medallist, but still a junior athlete with more to prove.

Her recent form on the junior circuit also gives this appearance extra weight. She finished runner-up at the Junior European Cup in Graz, and now arrives in the German capital as one of the biggest attractions of the tournament. In the -52 kg category, she is presented as the clear favourite.

Berlin is also familiar ground for her. In 2023, Babulfath won gold at this event, so she returns to a venue where she has already stood on top of the podium. That previous success, combined with her current level, makes her one of the central stories of the weekend.

There is also an interesting balance to her schedule. While some athletes are already collecting the first Olympic qualification points of the new cycle in Mongolia, Babulfath's official road toward Los Angeles 2028 in the -48 kg category is set to begin later, at the Lausanne Grand Slam in late August. For now, Berlin becomes a short but meaningful stop between major senior goals.

That is what makes this entry so compelling. Babulfath is no longer simply a promising junior, but she has not completely left that chapter behind either. She is moving between two levels of the sport, carrying senior medals, junior expectations, and the pressure that comes with both.

For the Berlin Junior European Cup, that gives the event an extra spark. A tournament that often showcases future potential will now feature an athlete who has already reached the Olympic podium and is still only 20 years old.

Babulfath arrives in Berlin with recent silver and strong memories from 2023.

The bigger Olympic campaign can wait a little longer. This weekend, the focus is Berlin, and Tara Babulfath once again steps into the spotlight.
